The Interview

1. What drew you to YA writing?

Thanks for having me on your awesome blog, Stacey! Hmm. Well, I grew up reading it. From Christopher Pike to V. C. Andrews to C. S. Lewis. I also read a lot of High Fantasy and D & D books, like Forgotten Realms and Ravenloft, growing up. And Anne Rice, too. Then I started noticing where the YA genre was heading. Over the past five years it's grown up, but still holds true to the voice. No matter what I wrote-short stories, poetry, novels-throughout my life, there was always that "voice" that fit in with the YA genre. I felt like this was where I needed to be. I wanted my work to grow with the new direction of YA.

2. Are there any upcoming YA releases that you're excited about?

Yes! So many! I don't want to leave anybody out, but I don't want to cover your blog with a huge list LOL First of all, my amazing critique partners have releases this year! Rachel Harris's MY SUPPER SWEET SIXTEENTH CENTURY and Shannon Duffy's SPECTRAL. I can't wait for these to hit the market! I'll pop off a few that I haven't read yet that I'm looking forward to: BITTERBLUE, INCARNATE, INNOCENT DARKNESS, PURE, WINGS OF THE WICKED, STRUCK, GLITCH, HEMLOCK, THE ALCHEMY OF FOREVER, THE SELECTION, and ARTICLE 5. And oh, there's so many more. This year I probably won't get much writing done because I'll be hiding in my cave reading.

3. Do you listen to music when you write? If so, does Destiny's Fire have a playlist?

I don't listen to music while writing. That would be too distracting for me. But I listen to music while doing everything else. It's a must for cleaning. DESTINY'S FIRE does have a playlist. I like to listen to songs that inspire scenes while I'm doing the dishes or folding laundry. There's a lot of Industrial bands on it. Nine Inch Nails, etc. Also Again by Flyleaf is a great song on the playlist. But there's one song I consider Dez's, that I feel really captures her and the story itself. And that's Blinding by Florence and the Machine.

4. What inspired Destiny's Fire?

Well, above everything, the determination to be published lol. I had written two books before DF that were shelved. I decided I needed to write something that really challenged me as a writer. I read a lot of short stories at online e-zines, and the Steampunk genre is heavy with the Sci-Fi and Fantasy zines. I fell in love with it. But, there were things in traditional Steampunk I felt girls and young women, myself included, wouldn't relate to. So I thought long and hard on combining the elements of the genres I love to come up with a story I felt I could write. The characters really inspired it, though. It was their personalities and their paranormal abilities that shaped the world of DESTINY'S FIRE. Everything else fell into place after that.

5. Can you tell our readers a little bit about Dez?

Sure. She's spunky, and she's definitely determined. Though she's a little on the shy side at times. She doesn't dress all revealing the way most of the girls in Haven Falls does. She's crushing on her best friend, Jace. She knows she shouldn't, but things are changing between them. That is, until she meets Reese, who challenges her in ways she wasn't prepared for. The most important thing to Dez is keeping her friends and her mom safe. She's hid a big secret her whole life, and she's coming up on her 17 th birthday which will threaten everything she's every believed.

6. How would you describe Jace?

Jace is uber protective. Sometimes to the point of anal. He's a rebel, and goes against his council all in order to protect his family and friends. He's strong in this way. He doesn't think twice about sticking up for someone he cares about. But he does have his bad qualities. He can get a good sulk on. He's broody and pouty when something doesn't go his way.

7. Will you tell us about one of your favorite scenes to write in Destiny's Fire?

Ooh. My favorite was probably the airship scene. When Dez and her friends sneak aboard. Trying not to be all spoiler-y. But the last part of the scene. lots of stuff happens, and then they dive off the back of the airship with their glider wings. Yeah. That was definitely a fun scene to write. Every time I read it, I can visualize if perfectly.

8. Is Destiny's Fire part of a series? If so, when will the next book come out and can you tell us a bit about it?

I wrote it with a series in mind. Although I ended the book in a way that can be considered wrapped up. Everyone wanted to wait to see how the first book did (that would be me) because, well, I wasn't sure how well it would be accepted. The sequel has been started. But I don't have a release date at this time. It's definitely no longer than eight months, though.

9. I noticed you also have a novelette out called Unveiled, can you tell us a bit about that?

UNVEILED is a short story (around 40 pages) I wrote to tie in to a Dystopian series I'm working on. It has a Historical feel, and centers on a girl raised by rebels to be an assassin. But, she wears pretty satin dresses. Karm is a Camelot-esque utopia surrounded by a force field, and she's sent on a mission to take out one of Karm's knights. The full novel follows Zara, a character seen at the beginning of UNVEILED, and is completed. It goes on submission with my agent at the end of January.

10. What advice would you offer an aspiring YA author? (Our readers tend to range from 12-22)

I've answered this question a bunch lately. It's strange, even though I have a book out, I still feel like I'm not there lol. I think when you try for so long, it gets stuck in your head-ingrained to keep trying. That struggle. And it's going to take a while for me to accept that, okay, yeah, I'm an author.

The only thing I can tell others is to read. A lot. Read so much in your genre that you're nearly sick of reading lol. Then write. Don't write one book. I mean, yes, write one book, but if that first one doesn't make it, read some more and write another book. Keep doing this routine. Reading and then writing, until you write the book that makes it. Never give up. If it's your dream, then you won't be able to quit. You'll be compelled to keep writing. Because this is what writers do.
